Hi, my name is Rebekah. I am a final year Biology student at the university of Greenwich. I Have been at the university of Greenwich for 4 years as a student due to doing a foundation year, which gave me the skills and confidence to get through the rest of my degree. Even though when I first got onto the extended programme. I was disappointed in myself for not achieving the grades I wanted to achieve through my A levels for me it was a great steppingstone to take to where I am now.
Now let’s start at the beginning I was always seen as weird in school. I always had a passion for science but struggled to communicate it in the ways, that we are usually assessed. So therefore, I was in the lowest sets and treated as if I was not good enough. Through my early years there was one teacher in my junior school the saw past what the others had seen and supported me in my scientific interest. He helped prepare me for secondary school.
Throughout secondary school is was told I would hot be able to pass my GCSE’s this was done by a female Teacher. This was due to lack of attendance due to illness, although throughout this I still went on to achieve 9 A*-C grades in my GCSE’s this was partially due to the support of the head of science in my final year of GCSE’s. who fought for me do to the higher papers which allowed me to achieve an A and B in my GCSE sciences and allowed me to move on to taking my A levels. She encouraged my passion for science and encouraged my ambition to take A level sciences and make science my career
At the start of my Levels I started taking Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths which is soon learned was too much and dropped it down do Biology chemistry and Physics but still this was too much alongside health issues. As I got Es ad Us at the end of my first year, but I persevered. I retook my A levels continuing with Biology and Chemistry. As they were my passions and the area I wanted to follow as a career. A reason I am doing a biology degree now. Alongside A level Sociology. These next two years where also a challenge with medical issues but I pushed on achieve two C’s and a D in my A level. As mentioned above these were not to grades that I was hoping for as I caused me to have to do a foundation year, but this was a blessing in disguise.
Greenwich University has allowed me to grow in knowledge and confidence to achieve higher than I have ever achieved with very supportive lecturers that have helped me grow and have been inspirations to what I could do in the future and the type of career I may be able to obtain.
Throughout all of this, several women in science have been role models to me all the way whether be fictional or those involved in my life such as teachers through my schooling or lecturers during my time at university. Inspiring me to carry on through hard times and follow my goal of pursuing a scientific career. From the head of science in my final year of GCSE’s that helped me achieve the grades needed to take science at A level, to lecturers who inspired me to want to follow a scientific career through work experience carried out in a laboratory setting and supporting me throughout my degree.
